When the Mayflower Pilgrims held the first Thanksgiving feast in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, in the 1620s, they had no inkling that they had begun a tradition that would endure for centuries and generations to come.
Who knew then that the Pilgrim Fathers, out of gratitude to God and the generosity of the Native American people, had initiated a tradition that would be a vital thread woven into the very fabric of this great nation! It reaches out like gentle hands beckoning loved ones from around the country, to gather around the family table. Petty and serious differences are set aside as families collectively appreciate their many blessings and each other.
Leaves transform to glorious shades of yellow and gold, orange and crimson ; the air turns nippy. Toasty kitchens are densely infused with intermingling aromas of roasting turkey, cranberry sauce, collard greens, and corn bread; pumpkin pie and gingerbread. The cacophony of family laughter and animated conversation competes with the fragrance of the greatly anticipated feast.
